In addition to its importance in human disease transmission, blacklegged ticks are also involved in transmitting the Lyme disease spirochete to dogs, cats, and certain livestock species, most notably horses and cattle. The brown dog tick, lone star tick, and American dog tick have been variously implicated in the transmission of canine ehrlichiosis and canine babesiosis. The American dog tick is also responsible for causing tick paralysis in dogs. The extent to which tick-borne diseases affect domestic animals in New Jersey is unknown. More information on tick-borne diseases of domestic animals can be found at the American Veterinary Medical Association website.
