Freehold Township has been recognized as a Tree City USA since 1981.
The National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service sponsors the Tree City USA program.
To become a Tree City USA, a community must meet the following standards. They must:
- Establish a tree board or department
- Adopt a tree care ordinance
- Establish a comprehensive community forestry program
- Observe Arbor Day annually
