There are 10 active wells in the system. The wells are drilled to 3 different aquifers and range from 500 to 1,200 gallons per minute in capacity. There is a water treatment plant located at each well field. The groundwater from the wells is of very high quality. The primary function of the treatment plant is to remove iron and manganese from the water.
The water from each source of supply is discharged into a water distribution system consisting of water mains from 6 inches to 16 inches in diameter. The Township has a master plan for the distribution system and detailed design standards for extensions. Primarily, developers install extensions and each development is reviewed to ensure that the water system extension complies with the master plan and the design standards. The system is also modeled with a hydraulic analysis computer program. The model is used to ensure that the system is capable of meeting demands and providing fire flow at adequate pressures. Modeling the system provides a basis for requiring developers to install any off-site improvements necessary to serve their project. The Township currently has approximately 135 miles of water mains.
