Traffic Safety Unit

Freehold Township Police Department - Traffic Safety Unit

Traffic Safety is routinely regarded as the #1 quality of life issue concerning the residents of Freehold Township. This concern becomes more prominent whenever there is a traffic related incident, such as a crash resulting in serious injuries or fatalities. Traffic Safety is one of the primary functions of the uniformed patrol division, who are responsible for ensuring the safety of motorists traveling within Freehold Township. Our patrol officers handle numerous traffic related functions on a daily basis such as:

  • Motor vehicle crash investigations
  • Speed enforcement
  • Selective traffic enforcement
  • Work Zone Safety / Traffic Plans
  • DWI patrols
  • Disabled / abandoned vehicle investigations

Function of the Traffic Safety Unit

The Freehold Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit (TSU) is a special unit of officers within the Patrol Division. The primary duty of the TSU is the enforcement of traffic laws in an effort to reduce traffic collisions and to promote the rapid and safe movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic within the Township. These efforts result in safer roadways, fewer fatalities and injuries as a result of traffic crashes, as well as the reduction of property damage within the Township.

High Collision Rate Areas

TSU Officers concentrate their enforcement efforts in the areas of the Township with the highest collision rates. As a whole, these efforts have proven to be effective in reducing the numbers of collisions across the State. Additionally, recommendations and evaluations are made with respect to the following local traffic issues: ordinance regulations, towing company compliance, traffic safety research and potential impact analysis of future development upon the roadways of the Township.

Speeding

Speed, one of the leading causes of traffic collisions, is enforced through the use of police radar/laser devices. The unit also utilizes several speed display trailers in an effort to combat speeding and gain compliance with the speed laws within the Township. The speed display trailers are rotated throughout the Township to help inform motorists of their speeds and to serve as an educational tool.

Other Responsibilities of the Traffic Safety Unit

Officers in the TSU are responsible for compiling data, providing research and developing recommendations on issues related to violations of motor vehicle law, traffic engineering issues, traffic safety education and other traffic concerns presented by the community. Officers oversee several State and Federal funded grant programs supporting seatbelt compliance, impaired driving enforcement and distracted driver enforcement, in addition to other local programs supported by the Drunk Driver Enforcement Fund (DDEF).
